With great sorrow we say good-bye to our friend, Roger Goure, youngest son of Light Center co-founders, Jim and Diana Goure. Roger died on October 13, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
We are sponsoring a memorial service for Roger on Sunday, November 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Light Center, 232 Divine Way, Black Mountain, NC 28711. If you are not able to attend in person, we will be streaming the event. To request a link, please email: dome@urlight.org
Roger was born on May 11, 1963, in Bethesda, Maryland. He attended Montgomery County schools until moving with his family to Black Mountain in 1970. He graduated from Owen High School in 1981, and attended Virginia Tech where he was a cheerleader. Roger left college in 1986, after the death of his father, Jim, to help Diana. Later he moved to Seattle, Washington, where he trained as a massage therapist and lived on a boat. Eventually, he returned to the Asheville, working at the YMCA, and driving shuttles at the Biltmore House and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. He also became the driver for his mom Diana as she grew older.
Roger was known for his quiet, harmonious ways. He had mastered the art of the understatement and wit. For years, he was active as a volunteer at the dome and served on our Board of Directors. At one time, he lived and worked at the Lodge. He was a very dear part of our Light Center family.
