Dear Light Group,

The spiritual master Yogananda once said to his guru, Sri Yukteswar, “I don’t believe in astrology.”  Sri Yukteswar then told Yogananda, “All parts of creation are linked together” and “Astrology is the study of man’s response to planetary stimuli.”  Yukteswar said, “A child is born on that day and at that hour when the celestial rays are in mathematical harmony with his individual karma.”

But Yukteswar didn’t believe we should be passive in the face of astrological influences: “The message boldly blazoned across the heavens at the moment of birth is not meant to emphasize fate – the result of past good and evil – but to arouse man’s will to escape from his universal thralldom.  What he has done, he can undo….he has spiritual resources which are not subject to planetary pressure….The wise man defeats his planets – which is to say his past – by transferring his allegiance from the creation to the Creator.  The more he realizes his unity with Spirit, the less he can be dominated by matter.”

So if we believe in astrology (not everyone does), then perhaps we should see it as a gift: we are being presented with a picture that reflects our past and that offers us an opportunity to overcome that past – to switch our allegiance from the creation to the Creator.

To initiate that process, you might want to acknowledge and give thanks for your linkage to the planets and to the rest of creation: “Thank you, God, for oneness with all creation.  Thank you, God, for the messages of the planets. Thank you, God, for the astrological energies in my life, which have shown me who I have been and which have presented me with opportunities to overcome my past.”

Next, you might want to give thanks for having been given the tools to work with your past: “Thank you, God, for the Effective Prayer and for other prayer and meditation techniques.  Thank you, God, for the spiritual masters and friends who have helped me with the challenges of life.  Thank you, God, for everyone in my life and for the lessons they have helped me learn.”

Then, you might run an experiment.  See what emerges when you pray, “Thank you, God, for revealing to me what I need to know about my past.”

And finally, you might want to wrap up with a prayer such as: “I release all of my past to the Light.  I am Light.  I am one with the Creator.  I create Good for the benefit of everyone and everything.  Thank you, God, for making it so.”

Love and Light,
Tully
