Dear Light Group,

The U.S. election will occur this coming Tuesday. It has been an emotional time for many. Although people feel exhausted by what has transpired, emotions are likely to run high even after the election.

I am reminded, at this time, of the closing lines of Abraham Lincoln’s second and first inaugural addresses, which I have copied below and which I offer for those of you seeking some calm in this storm:

“With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

With these poetic words as inspiration, I offer this prayer:

Thank you, God, for having blessed America with great leaders. May the Light that guided them guide us. May our government rest on the shoulders of the Christ. May this Christ Light guide all of our current and future leaders. May it guide each one of us. Help us to remember that our faith is not in another person but in the Christ Light within. Let us remember that our individual missions are to be that Christ Light and to have that Christ Light guide all of our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Touch all of us with the better angels of our nature, that the nation may once again sing in union. God bless the United States of America.
