Dear Light Group,

A nation’s character and values can be reflected in its holidays.  In the United States, our primary holidays are Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.  These holidays show that we value freedom (Independence Day), honor those who have fought to keep us free (Memorial Day), honor those who work (Labor Day), give thanks for our manifold blessings (Thanksgiving Day), and praise the Lord (Christmas Day).  These holidays also indicate that we have a focus on giving birth to that which is new: a new nation (Independence Day), a new Christ child (Christmas Day), and a new year (New Year’s Day).  Newness, freedom, work, worship: those are among our primary values.
Our nation and those values are under assault from both internal and external forces.  So during this time of year when three of these holidays – Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day – are bunched together, let us reaffirm our commitment to these values.
This Saturday, you might want to try a prayer such as:
Thank you, God, for the United States of America.  Thank you, God, for our freedoms.  Thank you, God, for the freedom to worship Thee in our own way.  Thank you, God, for the freedom to speak the truths in our minds, hearts, and souls.  Thank you, God, for the many blessings you have bestowed on our nation and our people.  Give us the strength to confront our challenges and the compassion to be a force for Thy Good.  Thank you, God, for helping us to find new ways of living the life of the Christ.  Amen.

Love and Light,
